Introduction
Paddington Square, situated in the W2 area of London, is undergoing an ambitious development project aimed at creating a new working, shopping, and dining quarter. Rapid Readymix, a reputable supplier of readymix concrete, played a significant role in this development through precise and efficient delivery of concrete. The project demanded various delivery methods including concrete pumps, hydraulic chute extensions, “drop & go” deliveries, and wheelbarrows, depending on the quantity and specific requirements.
Background
Paddington Square has been undergoing development since February 2022, we have delivered hundreds of cubic metres of concrete to the location so far. The site is situated in a bustling area near Paddington Station, which poses challenges in terms of traffic and accessibility. The development aims to transform the area into a vibrant hub for working, shopping, and dining.
Project Objectives and Requirements
For this particular delivery, 20 cubic metres of concrete was ordered. The concrete mix used was RC32/40, known for its robustness and versatility, ideal for large-scale construction projects.
The site’s busy location necessitated coordination, and Rapid Readymix allowed 20 minutes between deliveries to reduce congestion. Cube testing on-site was a requirement to ensure that the concrete used was of the desired strength.
Challenges and Solutions
The challenges of this project primarily revolved around access restrictions due to the busy location. There was no allowance for waiting on the road, necessitating pre-warning the site when the truck was arriving to ensure that it could pull straight in. If the site was not clear, the truck had to be diverted to a safe location.
Moreover, the project is located within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which required adherence to strict pollution control measures.
Rapid Readymix used AggSmart technology to monitor truck locations and provide accurate ETAs. This technology proved instrumental in ensuring that trucks could access the site without causing congestion or delays.
In terms of hardware, on some occasions a 20+ metre pump pipeline was installed to ensure fast and efficient delivery. Due to the site’s tight access, truck measurements were checked and communicated to the site beforehand. Extra pumping pipeline was also loaded in case there was a need to move the pump further away.
Results and Conclusion
Despite the logistical challenges posed by the bustling location, Rapid Readymix succeeded in delivering concrete within our designated two-hour time frames, while keeping the site informed of ETAs for each pour.
