Introduction

In the heart of Wimbledon Village, a prestigious area in South West London, a new construction project took place. This project involved building a three-storey house with a basement. With over 130m³ of concrete delivered since November 2022, this project posed unique challenges due to its location and timing.

Background

Wimbledon Village is known for its charming streets, chic boutiques, and, of course, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The project took place on a one-way road off Wimbledon Village, and its purpose was to construct a new residential building.

Over 130m³ of concrete had been delivered for this project since November 2022. The area can be bustling, especially during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, which significantly affected the delivery schedules.

Job Requirements

For this specific task, 5m³ of RC35/45 concrete mix was ordered, which included the additive Masterpel 793 waterproofer to ensure the durability and water-resistance of the structure. Cube testing was conducted on-site as part of quality assurance measures.

One of the challenges was the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, which started in the middle of the project. The tennis matches began at 11am on the outside courts and 1pm on the centre court. All deliveries had to be completed and off-site before 11am to avoid traffic congestion and adhere to local regulations.

Constraints and Challenges

As Wimbledon Village is a hub of activity during the tennis season, scheduling was a significant constraint. The project was located within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which necessitated adherence to specific environmental standards. The one-way road leading to the site further compounded access restrictions.

All deliveries needed to be meticulously planned and executed to ensure timely and efficient delivery without causing disruption to the surrounding area.

Techniques and Hardware Used

To overcome the challenges, wheelbarrows and an extension chute were employed for more manageable and slower delivery. Approximately 25 wheelbarrows were used per cubic metre of concrete.

By using small amounts and transporting them through wheelbarrows, the team ensured precision in placement while adhering to the tight schedules.

Conclusion

Despite the tight constraints due to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the team managed to complete all tasks on time. Clear communication with the client and precise planning ensured that there were no delays or disruptions.

The client, an ongoing customer of Rapid Readymix for years, was pleased with the services, attesting to the dedication and expertise of the Rapid Readymix team in navigating complex challenges with efficiency and precision.
