Brief Summary

Rapid Readymix was commissioned to carry out a concrete delivery for roadworks on the A3 near Cobham, KT11. The operation necessitated careful planning and coordination due to its unique requirements, including out-of-hours work and limited site access. The delivery method involved the use of an extension chute.

Job Background

We have previously worked with this company on several one-off deliveries along the A3/M25. The present task required out-of-hours deliveries when the motorway was closed off, to support the ongoing improvements to the A3 and M25 motorway around London.

Job Requirements

This project required the delivery of 20m3 of RC40/50, a particularly robust mix. Due to restricted space on site, only one truck could be present at any given time. Therefore, efficient communication between our transport teams, the office, and the site was vital to ensuring a smooth delivery. For this reason, we used our Aggsmart technology to pin the site’s location precisely and initiated a call 5 minutes prior to arrival to ensure safe access.

Constraints and Challenges

Working on a motorway presented unique access restrictions. There was no waiting space near the site, and the job had to be carried out during the evening due to scheduled motorway closure times. As such, we had to preplan routes to avoid residential areas and restricted roads during the evenings. The site also presented space and time restrictions which we successfully navigated.

Techniques and Hardware Used

An extension chute was deployed in this project, allowing the concrete to reach points 6-7 meters from the back of the truck, since a pump wasn’t an option due to restricted space on site. The Aggsmart software was invaluable for marking the work area location. A call was made 5 minutes before arrival onsite, and our office was manned during the evening to assist with any potential issues and ensure health and safety regulations were upheld.

Conclusion

Despite the unusual hours and unique challenges, all tasks were completed on time with the arrival on-site at 10 pm, as requested, and completion within the allocated timeframe. The efficient communication, accurate planning, and use of innovative technology ensured the project’s success.
